Blog Post 1: What Values do You Bring to the Workplace?

Please write at least one paragraph for each question. Remember, thoroughness in internalizing your personal feelings and experiences and use of application of terms and concepts from your readings best demonstrates your understanding and synthesis of the experience and the course materials.

1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?

2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.

Your responses to Blog Post 1 are due by 5 pm Eastern Time on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010.

  1. There are four key values that I try, to the best of my ability, to live my life by. Hopefully I can bring these values with me as I venture into the workforce.
    1) Integrity - Match beliefs, actions, and talk. Be a man that keeps his word. Be honest and upfront with people. Adhere to the "Newspaper Rule" when faced with a difficult situation. (If I were to see my action on the front page of the New York Times, would I still do the action?)
    2) Forward Looking - Set challenging yet obtainable goals for myself. Even though it is vitally important to plan and prepare, it's also vitally important to live in the present. It is only by living in the present that we create our future.
    3) Competency - Constantly learn. Read for pleasure. Set out on new adventures. Become knowledgeable and great at whatever undertaking I am involved in.
    4) Inspiring - Help others. Know that in order to find youself; you must lose yourself in the service of others. Become a merchant of hope. Be patient, kind, and courteous.
These four values encompass everything I want to be as a son, brother, student, organziation member, and person.

I hope the words and teachings of the Bible can be my source as an ethical code. I want to strive to be what Jesus taught throughout his life. Some of the things that I hope I can take from the Bible and its teachings include:
    - Be patient - Slow down. Listen to people's perspectives on things. Do not rush to conclusions; I have no idea what other people are going through.
    - Be kind and love - Show respect towards everyone. Do no harm to others.
    - Do not envy - Be happy with what I have and be happy for other people's good fortune.
    - Do not boast - Do not become greedy or selfish. Remain humble. Give to others willingly and graciously.
    - Show integrity in all matters - Be honest and upfront with people.
    - As noted above, use the "Newspaper Rule" in difficult situations.
    - Use the "Mama Rule" - would my mother be proud to hear what I am doing?
There is a great poem called "The Man in the Glass." The poem suggests that it does not matter what other people think of you, the only person that you have to please is the man looking back at you in the mirror. I believe if I can adhere to the ethical code listed above, the man in the glass will be very happy.

  2. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?
    a. Resiliency- I think it is important to believe you can rebound, to look to the future. This I value in my life very strongly in that I believe past events may have helped shape my future but they do not define it. Maintaining the ability to look forward is valuable in life and in the workplace because it allows me to not get hung up on previous setbacks but to persevere and accomplish tasks.
    b. Health and Happiness
    i. I believe them to be one in the same. I value my health and the personal choices I can make to maintain and care for my health. This will come in very important in my career of Health Communications because I have an understanding and appreciation for well-being.
    c. Practice Optimism.
    i. Maintain a positive attitude, believing in the best of others and myself. This allows me to seek the inner goodness of others and to allow others to see the inner goodness in me. This attitude is approachable and makes it easier for others to work beside me, especially in a work environment.
    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.
    a. Represent what you believe to be honest and true
    i. Sometimes in work situations there may present an opportunity for you to bandwagon and support or represent a position that you do not personally agree with. To me, it is important to always feel comfortable with your life and the choices you make. You should not be ashamed of your actions because they are representative of you.
    b. Learn from others, let others learn from you. Respect the Differences.
    i. I believe that when given the chance to interact with others from different backgrounds, cultures, or with different life experiences you should learn everything you can from these people as they can enrich your life. Broadening your understanding of the world, yourself and others is a wonderful opportunity that will allow you to further understand different situations. Expanding views is essential to an active mind. Also, it is important to realize that people can learn from you. The impact you have on others can be profound. It is important to remember to carry yourself in a respectable manner.
    c. Strive for the best.
    i. I will always try to better myself and the environment of mine and others. I believe that with compassion I can improve situations and others lives. Also, I believe self-improvement is an important motivation to advance in life. To always strive for something with full effort.

  3. What values do you bring to the work place?

1.)Character- “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” The work that I produce and the organization or company I am employed by must reflect what I believe in. I will not compromise who I am or what I believe in for my profession.
2.)Passion- I believe it is essential to have a passion for what I am doing. I must be invested 100%. This means that I identify with the mission of my employer and invested in the work I am producing.
3.)Respect- Respect is not defined by position, but by action. All humans deserve respect. No voice should go unheard or be oppressed. I believe each individual deserves the right to be respected and valued.
4.)Awareness- “The important thing is this: to be able at any moment to sacrifice who we are for what we could become.”- W.E.B. Dubois

I believe it is important to have self-awareness. By recognizing my own strengths and weaknesses I can not only learn but grow into a stronger professional. Awareness also includes being resourceful. By seeking the tools to answer my questions, and investing in professional development I can contribute more.
5.)Social Justice- I want to produce work that improves the lives of others. It is imperative that I am working to for a company or organization that is socially conscious and educates its’ members on topics of concern. Training employees and re-evaluating company practices and procedures to make it environmentally friendly, participating in ethical business transactions and equal opportunities for all employees is very important.
6.)Innovation- I need to be in an environment which cultivates creativity and is not afraid to try something new or take a risk on a new idea. I want my employers to trust my instinct and support my independent contributions.
7.)Servant leadership- I want to work in a place that encourages service. I want opportunities to serve the community and work place. I also want supervisors who lead by example and hold themselves accountable to serving their constituents.

What ethical code might guide my future career?

“Go to the people. Live with them. Learn from them. Love them. Start with what they know. Build with what they have. But with the best leaders, when the work is done, the task accomplished, the people will say "We have done this ourselves".” –Lao Tzu

The quote featured above is the ethical code which I strive to adhere by in the workplace. I believe that in order to be an effective employee or supervisor I have to be respectful and informed about the people I work with. I have to gain and possess an idea of who they are and what makes up the core of their actions. I believe that I need to recognize that there is something to learn from all people whether my experience is negative or positive with them. By loving people I am accepting them for what they are and the diversity of their opinions and life perspectives. I will be supportive and understanding by recognizing where they are in their professional lives and help elevate them in any way I can. I will build them by recognizing areas I can improve to be a better support as a co-worker and employee. Most importantly no matter where I work or what position I hold I want people to feel that they have contributed to the cause, the organization, or to my life. Appreciating others is an important value that is essential to the symbiotic growth of all.

  4. The values that I believe I bring and will continue to bring into any workplace that I'm involved with, essentially fall into four main points.
1.) Dependability: This value is a very crucial one, in my opinion, for any successful goal/career/endeavor when working with others. By being easily accessible, ready and prepared to work, and on time or early, one shows the characteristic of being dependable. This quality shows consideration for the others involved and makes for a more successful outcome.
2.) Respect: I realize this value has already been mentioned, however, that should deem the value even more necessary. This value also branches off from the previous named value as the consideration and respect of others is one possible motivator to be dependable. Being respectful, or conscious of how one's actions can effect others, is imperative in a working environment. The topic of "job satisfaction" noted in the text, is easily relatable to this concept. "One variable that has been linked to job satisfaction is communication satisfaction" (Pincus, 1986).
3.) Dedication: This value is one that I find to be relevant because with it, the resulting outcome will be better. In essence, it will reflect the amount of hard-work that was put in. This value is important in not only group but individual settings, as well.
4.) Assertiveness: This is a value that I believe I possess, but it is one that not everyone needs. In my opinion, a group is more successful when only a few are the assertive type. Being assertive, not as being aggressive, helps to get the job done correctly by asking all the necessary questions and checking off on everything.

The ethical code that I would use to guide my future career would look as follows:
1.) Consider all consequences: This code refers back to my previous first two values named: dependability and respect. By considering what will occur and who will be effected, I can make a better, more insightful decision.
2.) Be Fair: I agree with this notion especially as it is referenced in the text, "the value of fairness implies the equitable balance of power and resources, and any behavior that reduces the resources...should be considered unethical."
3.) Be accurate and concise: In this I mean specifically, do not lie. This would be even more vital in a journalism or broadcast career. Failure to adhere to such a code would inevitably, if not immediately, result in termination.
4.) Be positive: This is a characteristic that may not directly effect ones quality of work, but I do believe it does indirectly. By being positive and upbeat, one is open to new possibilities and view situations more optimistically. This is a quality that, honestly, more people need and it's lacking in the world today.

  5. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?
    a. Respect: I believe that respect is both given and earned. I start out giving respect to a person. The only time I lose respect for a person is when that person has done something disrespectful.
    b. Leadership: Each person in the workplace has the ability to lead others. And each person should also have the ability to follow. The only way to achieve goals is to be able to do both, sometimes at the same time.
    c. Loyalty: I am always loyal to the company that I am employed at. I do what is best for the company because having a job their makes my livelihood possible.
    d. Character: I work to the best of my ability to produce the best quality work.
    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.
    • Be fair to your peers- If you are fair to them, they will be fair to you.
    • Always be accurate in your work- Being accurate when doing your work leads to less time correcting mistakes that your boss could see.
    • Don’t waste time because time is money- I think this one explains itself.
    • Be the best that you can be at your job- By doing this, you can maximize your output and really take pride in your job.
    • Attack tasks head on- This applies to the last point. A half-hearted job yields half- hearted results.
    • Be positive and supportive of your peers: Your workplace should be treated like a family. By being positive and supportive, the family will not be a dysfunctional one.
    • Take pride in your job- Enjoy what you do and know that you do your job to the best of your ability.

  6. 1.Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?

The four main values I would bring to the workplace would be timeliness, dependability, honesty, and hard work. Timeliness is important because businesses are very fast paced and if you are too slow you will get left behind. It is important to be on time to meetings and to meet all deadlines. You do not want others to have to wait on you. Another important value to bring to the workplace is being dependable. It is important so that coworkers, employers, and clients can trust that you will get the job done and if they need help they can depend on you to be there for them. Honesty is another value that should be brought to the workplace because it will help you build strong relationships with your employers, clients, and coworkers. Building a strong relationship with the people you work with, based on honesty, will make your experience at that organization more enjoyable. Relationships built on dishonesty will eventually deteriorate and it will be hard for people to trust you again. Hard work is another important value to bring to the work place because if you work hard it will get noticed by your employers and coworkers. When others are relying on you to get something done, it is important to work your hardest to accomplish the task efficiently and effectively.

    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.

    • Be the best you can be: It is important that you work hard and be the best you can be. It will benefit the organization and give you a sense of satisfaction.
    • Respect others and learn from them: It is important to remember that everyone is different and has different opinions. You should listen to their opinions and learn from them. If you give them respect, you will build strong relationships that will benefit you and the organization.
    • Be patient and forgiving: People do not learn at the same pace or in the same way. It is important to recognize this and be patient when working or teaching them something new. Everyone makes mistakes, including yourself, so you should be forgiving.
    • Be optimistic: If you always think positively, then there will be positive outcomes. If a problem should occur optimism will help you to calm down and focus on getting the task accomplished. If you are optimistic, your coworkers and employers will recognize this and they too will become optimistic.

  7. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?
My own values are something that dictates my everyday life; they are an intrinsic part of my being. Values that I use in my everyday life will not differ from the values that I will bring into the workplace.
    1) Respect. In the workplace as in every aspect if life, you must show respect to others to gain their respect. Being respectful is a must especially in the workplace.
    2) Kindness. I believe that the good guy does finish last so showing my warm character will help open doors in the corporate world.
    3) Honesty. Living your life honestly is a must and lying will not get you anywhere especially in the workplace.
    4) Integrity. It’s important for me to do things I believe in and make a difference. But more importantly its important for me to stand up for things I believe are wrong or against my values. I will never do anything or work for anyone under unethical circumstances.
    5) Give 110%. I am never satisfied unless I give my 110% because you only have one life to live so you must do it right.

    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.
    • Is this right? It’s important for me to work for a company that has a mission to give back to their community and not just to make a profit.
    • Be a team player. You must be able to get along with co workers and work as a team to move forward in your career and life.
    • Be confident. You must have confidence in yourself otherwise no one will take you seriously. Even if you don’t have confidence at times, keep your head up.
    • Love what you do. If you don’t love your job or believe in it, you are wasting your time because life is already too short.

  8. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?
The values I want to represent are what I would want my employees, coworkers and bosses to also represent in the work place. They are values that I try to live by and follow in my life as well.
1). Dependability- I want to be someone whom my coworkers can always count on, whether it is being on time or having done my part. I do not want to be the person who might or might not show up or come through when counted on.
2). Communication- I want to be able to positively communicate with my co workers. As we know communication is the foundation of the organization, whether it’s a compliment or a critique to improve an aspect of our job, I feel communicating and dealing with the issue is the best way to approach any situation.
3). Enthusiastic- I want to want to be there. I want to be an employee who truly loves what they are doing and invest emotion into their work. I feel the more passionate and the more you want to be there, the better outcome of your work.
4). Character- I want to stay true to myself in the work place. I will not compromise my beliefs or morals for my work or workplace.

    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.
•Treat others as I would want to be treated- when people work together there will always be some form of confrontation. I believe it is important to respect others so they will respect me in return. Following this will make things run smoother in the workplace as well.
•Be positive- as corny as this phrase is, attitudes are contagious. A positive attitude brought to the work place WILL catch on. If you are in a positive atmosphere I believe more work and better work will be accomplished.
•Be a contributing factor- I want to make an impact on whatever I am doing no matter how little the task. I want to be an important member of my team, and a valued player.
•Roll with the punches- I feel it’s very important to be flexible. Things are not always going to happen how I would like or how planned , I feel it’s important to be able to comply with change easily.

  9. 1. Values:
    a. Determination: I think the absolute refusal to fail is the quality I have seen most in those who have successful careers. Letting others do the work and simply doing enough to get by are never the practices of truly great men and women. When I enter the work place, this value is what I hope to have most of. Going above and beyond people’s expectations is extremely rewarding and I hope to do this throughout my career.
    b. Loyalty: Loyalty is a value I take very seriously. I try to be loyal to everyone I care about in my personal life and I believe this should be extended to the workplace. If I did not personally care about the wellbeing of the company I worked for or my peers, I don’t think I could work to the best of my ability. An internal connection to the workplace is definitely key.
    c. Good attitude: Having a good attitude is something I’ve found to be a must. I’ve had days where going into work seemed unbearable, and my performance on those days were probably sub par. However when I was excited about what I was doing, or at least pretended to be, I produced better work and felt more appreciated.

    Ethical Codes:
    a. Respect: Respect is undeniably one of the most important codes to follow in a workplace. Those who do not feel respected have a weaker sense of moral and that is not good for any company.
    b. Fairness: Treating everyone the same way is important especially if you are in a position of power. Double standards are unfortunate and should definitely be avoided.
    c. Honesty & Integrity: Those who do not processes these qualities do not have the best interests of the company at heart. If I can look my peers in the eye and truly stand behind every decision I’ve made then I’ll know I’ve been following these codes. If not, then it’s definitely time to re-evaluate.

  10. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?

    A.Openness (consideration)
When working in environment full of different views, opinions, and ways of thinking, it’s very easy to get lost in your own head. I always try to position myself in a way in which people feel comfortable disclosing their thoughts and values without having to worry about being judged or criticized.
    B.Diligence
I feel that the only way to get the most out of any experience is to put your best effort into anything that you may come across. There is no such thing as ‘meeting halfway’ in the workplace and it’s crucial that you are careful and vigilant in your methods. Always have a cautious and optimistic attitude
    C.Honesty and integrity
To me, honesty is the best policy. I feel that for any organization, group, or team, all members should be upfront and truthful with one another so that errors/miscommunication may be avoided. If there is a problem with something or if there is an issue that must be called out, it’s better to catch it before it gets worse. I always try to be open with others when I feel that something is wrong or needs to be pointed out, but I do so in a respectable manner.
    D.Confidence
It’s easy to become intimidated by a large, stratified organization composed of lots people. However, if you stand up for what you believe in and hold yourself as a poised individual, your colleagues are bound to notice. After all, if we don’t believe in ourselves, who will?
    E.Appreciation
It’s a lie to say that all the work you will encounter in life will be fun and exciting. Work is about all the above and much, much more. The more appreciation you have for what you do, the more you will be satisfied with your accomplishments in the end. Overall, I try to think positively about almost everything I do and keep a constructive mindset.

    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.

A.Honesty/loyalty – I believe honesty is the best policy when it comes to dealing with other people. In my future career, I will definitely make a point to display high commitment to what I do.

B.Patience – “Good things come to those who wait.”/Good things really do take time.

C.Room for improvement – I always try to stay motivated and search for ways to improve myself. I believe there is always room to grow, and it doesn’t hurt to change things up a bit.
D.Fairness – Everyone will believe in what they want to believe, so I try to respect that. I’m not going to force my thoughts or views on someone that is unwilling to take it in. Also, I’m very open to what people have to say.

E.Skill – I hope to utilize my past experiences and acquired knowledge into doing something that I truly love to do.

  11. Many of the values I hold, because of being a swimmer, can transfer into the workplace. One thing that I value a lot is hard work. I am used to getting up every morning bright and early, ready for hard work. I value doing the best quality work to one’s ability, every time. I do not think it is fair to turn in something that was only half worked on and does not have much effort. Another thing I value is being able to balance all of one’s tasks at the same time. It is difficult to do this, because a lot of us have many things on our plate, but it is manageable, and I think it is important. I do not think it is right to turn in something late, or be late to work, just because you had so many other things to do. I respect people who can balance and manage their time well. One last value that I have is excellence. I value quality work that one can be proud of. I think excellence in the work place is necessary if one wants to move up in their field. Being excellent means wanting to succeed in everything you do.

    My ethical code:
    1. Honesty- I will always strive to be honest in the workplace. I think honesty is important because if I was not honest in my work, I could get into serious trouble. I also think that it is wrong to lie about something that could benefit you in any way. When it comes to the work place, honesty is the only way to go.
    2. Doing my best work at all times- I do not think it is right for someone to turn in work that has no effort put into it. It is sloppy, rude, and inefficient. It is not fair for someone to turn in work or do a job sloppy when others are trying to the best of their ability.
    3. Respect for others- I think it is very important to respect other people and their opinions. I know that some people may think differently from me, but their opinions matter just as much as mine. It is important that I treat everybody how I would want to be treated.
    4. Do not discriminate- I will never judge people based on their ethnic diversities. I think it is important to have a variety of ethnic diversities in the workplace because different people have different ideas and opinions.

  12. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?
Values define a person’s character. The values that I hope to bring to the workplace mirror the values that I bring to friendships and family relationships.

1)Compassion- Making sure you are understanding is key in establishing trust with others. If others can see that you are caring and concerned for them, then it will lead to more positive relationships in the workplace.

2)Loyalty and honesty- Staying loyal and honest with the organization and other employees is a must for a successful future because it shows your commitment to them.

3)Optimism and enthusiasm- Maintaining a positive attitude is so important in a workplace environment. It makes people feel more welcome when someone is there with a smiling face. Coming excited and ready to start the day in your work environment brings life to the organization.

4)Respect- Respect increases satisfaction. Having respect for yourself will make you feel like a more active member in the organization and let you have more respect for others. If everyone has a common respect for each other, then people are more likely to state how they feel within the organization.

    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career?
-The golden rule in life is to treat others in the way in a way that you want to be treated and it shapes my ethical code. My personal values guide my code of ethics and are based on the standards of society, as well as our personal standards. Because ethical codes are based on personal values and society’s view of right and wrong they are subject to change, but the main idea of your code should remain constant. When faced in a difficult position, I ask myself these questions…

1)Am I being honest and loyal? If you stay honest, then you gain the trust of fellow employees and employers. If people trust you, then the lines of communication are more open. Also, you immediately become more reliable.

2)Am I being true to myself? Getting caught up in a big decision or stressful atmosphere should not change your outlook on life. I aspire to keep my values close whenever faced with a difficult choice. Relating to others is important, but standing up for what you believe in and what the right thing to do is more important than making others happy.

3)Am I benefiting others or being selfish? Even though I think you should always stand up for what you believe in, I also think about the other people involved. I try to make sure that my decisions are unselfish and help rather than hinder others. If a problem cannot be solved one way, try to compromise.

4)Would my family approve or disapprove? Whenever conducting myself in public, I always consider what my parents would say if they were to find out about my every decision I made. If I think they might be displeased with my behavior, then I rethink if it is okay to continue with a decision. My family always says, “If the momma's not happy, then nobody’s happy!”

  13. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?
Integrity- I think it is important in the workplace, and in all aspects of life, to take responsibility for what you do and support the decisions you make. At the end of each workday, I want to know that I have made decisions and performed certain acts that I will not be ashamed or embarrassed to associate my name with. If you are going to do something, I think you should be held accountable for what you did; receive credit when credit is due, but also admit mistakes and wrongdoings if they occur, and learn from them.
Respect- Many times you do not get to choose who you work with, and sometimes the relationships you create with others at your workplace are not always a positive one. I think it is important to not let personal issues get in the way of your professionalism. I think it is harder on a person to hold resentment, anger, or animosity towards a coworker than it is to recognize you are two different people and that you should both equally try to put differences aside and work as a team in order to keep quality of work high.
Stand Firm in Your Beliefs- There will undoubtedly be times in your career that you disagree with something happening in the workplace. It is an important value of mine to stand firm in your beliefs, and not to let another group of people or an organization change your beliefs for the worst. It is important to keep your individuality within the workplace, and I think if you ever get to the point where you feel your character is being altered or you can’t be yourself, or even if you are just not doing work that you love and are passionate about, I think it is your personal values that will motivate you to choose another path in life.

    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.
-Learn from each experience you have and grow from them. You cannot change the past, but you still have control of your future. Do not waste time dwelling over a missed opportunity or something you should not have said or done but did do. Instead examine those past mistakes and see how later on in life you can prevent the same situation from happening.
-Do not do anything to another person that you would not do to yourself. Everything you say and do causes a reaction in others, and in order to stay on an ethical path it is important to reflect on what you are about to do or say before you do it and think about how personally would react to seeing someone else do the same thing to you. What may be appropriate to one person is not to another, and I think to stay ethical you must consider your environment before acting.
-Follow the example of your family. Throughout my life I have had very inspirational and ethical sound inspiration from my family to behave in a way that will make me a better person. Personally I think to myself whether or not I would say or do something in front of my mother before I actually do anything. This helps me check my behavior to make sure I am being as ethical a person as I can be.
-Be honest and loyal always. Our lives would be empty without all the relationships we create throughout our lifetime, and in order to maintain those relationships we must stay honest and loyal with those closest to us. Make those closest to you proud to have you in their lives, and as a result your actions will be ethical.

  14. 1. The main value that I will bring to the workplace is optimism. In any given situation, no matter how horrid it may be, I can always manage to see the bright side of things or at least look past the present obstacles into the future. Another value that I will bring to the workplace is reliability. Currently, I am president of my sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha, and I have learned the imperativeness of reliability through my experiences as a leader. The final value that I will contribute most to the workplace is open-mindedness. Although I have strong opinions of my own, I am always open and interested in others’.
    2. The open motto of my sorority is, “Aspire, Seek, Attain”. I live by this motto everyday, and will continue to use it as a guide in my future career. Aspire- I aspire to achieve the most that I can everyday and to never be content with average. Seek- I seek out opportunities to be active on JMU’s campus and also for my sorority to be as involved as possible with philanthropies. Attain- Through aspiring and seeking it is then possible to attain my goals and even some of the high standards that I have set for myself. I believe that by living through this motto I have cultivated values and ideals that complement a strong character will utilize this character in my future career to make a difference.

  15. My own personal values have been instilled in me since I was a child. My parents taught me what hard work and dedication. Through the process of swimming I have learned many attributes that I will take with me into the work place. The following are the values that I wish to portray to my future employers:
    1. Honesty- you have nothing but your word to fall back and its so very important to be known as an honest person because in today’s society this attribute is often hard to come by.
    2. Creativity- having the ability to bring a fresh look to an old attitude is something that I take pride in providing. Reinvention is so important in a company because old news doesn’t have to be old if you can put a fresh spin on it.
    3. Passion- loving what you do helps you produce top notch work. If you love it, you take pride in the work and often times you do a better job at it.
    4. Awareness- being aware of the people around you and your soundings help create and maintain a comfortable space for people to share their opinions without reservations.

Roll with it- this is my mantra of life. You cant control every aspect of life so when things don’t go your way, don’t let it frazzle you. Let the experience show you a new way of dealing with stress and just take a deep breath. Everything always works out in the end.
Stay positive- being the positive force behind a project is essential for employee satisfaction. No one wants to be dubbed the “Debbie downer” of the group. Positivity keeps life light hearted and less stressful.
Dependability- I want to be the person everyone can come to because they know I will be there for them. And if I don’t know the answer then they know that I will find it.
Reinvention- its easy to get stuck in a mundane routine and I don’t want to live my life that way. I don’t want to be afraid of change and I think its necessary to reinvent yourself every so often to keep things interesting and new. It lets you look at life in a different perspective and others see the change as well, it’s a contagious action.

  16. VALUES
    1) Give preference to others.
"Love one another with brotherly affection, giving precedence and showing honor to one another." -Romans 12:10
Each time we show preference we have to make a mental adjustment, we were planning on being first, and decide to be second. There is nothing out there that I need first, because everything that I need, I already have.

    2) Live every moment.
I want to tell some super-fab, crazy stories to my grandchildren. I want to do every thing I ever dreamed of and live EVERY SECOND of my life so that after I do those crazy things, I can think of more. If I died tomorrow, would I be okay with that? If not- there's some living I have to go do.

    3) Authenticity/Integrity
In 7th grade I was confused about why people tried to hard to fit in. I thought, 'if there are billions of people in the world, some of them have to be like you, and even more would be willing to be your friend.' Don't spend your time trying to change yourself to be someone that you're not, spend your time finding the people who want you just the way you are.

    4) Open-hearted
I love people, all people, everything about people. If they don't know that, I won't get to know them. I want people to know that I'm interested and open to them all the time.

    ETHICAL CODE
a)"Make it a habit to do nice things for people who'll never find out."

b)BE THANKFUL. You may not have everything you want, but you have everything you need. Life is a matter of what you focus on, so focus on the wonderful things that you have.

c)"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." You don't know what's going on in peoples' lives or what kind of history has gotten them to where they are today, be kind to them and give them an opportunity to show you.

    d) Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring, and integrity, they think of you."

    e) Be the person you wish to be. Evaluate who you are and who you want to be every. single. day. Make changes as you see fit, and become the person that you wish yourself to be.

    f) Be resolute. Recognize when you have to make the decision to a) deal with it or b) do something about it, and act accordingly.

    g) See yourself from other perspectives. Think about the way that you're representing yourself to others. "Who you are speaks so loudly, I can't hear what you're saying."

These are the things that govern my life and make me me. These aren't just the ethics and values that I bring with me to the workplace, but they're the values and ethics that compromise my identity; I take them with me wherever I go, whenever I go.

  17. The personal values I bring into the workplace are:
    1. Accountability: I always hold people to their word therefore I will always keep mine. If something is committed to, it will be done and done well as long as I am part of it. If someone’s share isn’t prepared or completed, there should be consequences.
    2. Respect: As an athlete I’ve learned to follow the “pecking order” of life. There is a level of appropriate actions and communication to be followed with various levels of the workplace, including with peers. Also, in general everyone deserves respect, unless they abuse their position.
    3. Positive Attitude: Working with many teams, I believe almost anything can be accomplished with a positive attitude and confidence. However, being positive does not mean being naïve to realistic events and barriers.
    4. Communication: There is an appropriate place and time for all communication. While conflict is inevitable, there is a right time and manner to discuss it. Communication should always be direct, on topic, and productive.
    Code of Ethics:
    - Be a good listener. Whether listening to another peer about issues, or following a direction, it is always important to not only hear but to listen to others.
    - Give everyone an equal chance. At first glance, everyone should get a shot in any relationship, personal, professional, etc. Strikes should be for good reasons and there should not be any exceptions to rules.
    - Stay true to your standards. Always hold yourself to your beliefs, regulations, and standards of people and actions.
    - Have confidence in others, especially those that affect you. But most of all, have confidence in everything you do, without it, others will not have confidence in you.

  18. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?

    1. Honesty & Trust: I believe honesty and trust go hand in hand, and could not go without either in both my personal life and my future workplace. I trust in myself first and believe that the truth is the way to reach my goals. Trusting in the company I work for and the coworkers will foster a positive work environment and help build strong relationships.
    2. Integrity: Integrity to me is matching words with actions. If you’re going to talk about it, be about it. Believe in what you do and have the faith and will to be able to back it up. In my career, I want those around me to see me as someone who stands by their actions and has a backbone.
    3. Dependability: Throughout my life, I have depended on those around me for various reasons. Without their assistance, I may not be where I am today. In the workplace, I think it is important have coworkers and managers look at you as a dependable person, similar to the way teammates depend on each other. This also goes along with trust. I strive to be the “go-to” person because I enjoy taking on the responsibility. When it comes to getting the job done, getting it done on time, and doing it to the standards that have been set for me, I want those around me to know they can depend on me to do just that & I want to be able to depend on them as well.
    4. Loyalty & Dedication: A loyal and dedicated person is, in my opinion, a great person to work with and to work for. I hope that my future coworkers and managers will see me as a loyal and dedicated person. I think it is of the upmost importance to prove to people where your loyalties lie.

    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.

    • Tell the truth. I think honesty is the best policy. It may be difficult at times to be honest, but those around you will respect you more and you can be honest without being critical.
    • Accept opinions. In the workplace, you will have to work with a diverse group of people to reach a goal and it is important to accept what other thinks and what ideas they bring to the table. Their strengths could be a weakness for you and vice versa.
    • Be Fair. No one person is better than another. While nothing is life is ever completely fair, it is important to try to minimize boasting or showing off at work.
    • Be Kind/ Respectful. Treat people how you want to be treated. Respect should be earned, not just given but remember that rule works both ways.
    • Be Yourself. You are who you are. No one can change that and you can’t change the way another person is either. Each person in the workplace is there because they bring something to the table. If you step away from who you really are, you are not only cheating yourself, but you are cheating your coworkers and the company that hired you. In my opinion, being something you’re not is also lying.
    • Work Hard. It’s really just that simple. Do the job that you were hired to do, and do it well. Your work should make you proud!

  19. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?

My own personal values all come from my parents. My parents have taught me a lot about life and how to treat people by always putting others first. My mother always says that no good deed goes unnoticed, and eventually God will reward you in some way. They always taught me to be honest, even if the truth will get you in trouble, because in the end all that matters is the truth. And of course, another rule to live by, “Do unto others as you would like to be treated”. These are all values that will be brought to my future career in public relations. The cardinal of public relations is to be honest, so I know that my values will get me ahead in my career. Last but definitely not least, live each day to the fullest, because God put you on this earth for a reason, and it is your job to make your mark!

    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.
1.Honesty-as I have said earlier, this is an important rule to live by, because if you’re not honest, the only person you’re hurting is yourself.
2.Integrity-Always have integrity no matter where life takes you, and stick to your own moral guidelines. Never compromise a company (or yourself) just to make a few extra dollars or to get a few minutes of fame.
3.Perserverence- Never give up on what you set out to do. Everything will fall eventually, so stick with whatever project you begin. Don’t leave any loose ends untied.
4.Set the bar high- This is an important code to live by, because by taking the easy way out, you’re only cheating yourself. Always work the best of your ability and don’t be afraid to step out of the box and try new things!

  20. 1. What values do you bring to the workplace?

    1) As someone who has worked since I was fourteen I value perseverance. To be a good worker you must challenge yourself to try to be the best in everything you do. Even if that means making mistakes and learning first-hand to not do it again. Perseverance doesn’t just mean striving to be the best but striving for what you want as well. I value setting goals and making a plan of action. Without goals we are merely wandering around with no purpose. Goals give us a sense of purpose and purpose is given to us through working and doing something meaningful.

    2) I also value making an effort to relate to others. In order to have a conducive work environment you must start at the heart of the setting, the workers themselves. Being able to relate to one another in a healthy and happy manner not only helps the workplace become a friendly atmosphere but also helps and promotes productivity making everyone happy. Relating to others through respect and empathy is a way to value those around you.

    3) I also value being a leader in the work place but also knowing when there is an appropriate time to be led. If they world was full of leaders how would anything get done?

    2. What ethical code will guide your future career path?

    • I will respect my co-workers and treat them as I would want to be treated- Treating others with respect is very important in relating to others in a
    • I will not plagiarize and not take credit for anything but my own work- When I have a job taking credit for something you didn’t do is not only cheating yourself but cheating the other person.
    • I will not try to manipulate my co-workers or lie to my boss to get what I want- I want to be truthful in all of my endeavors and do things not merely for my own benefit but for the companies
    • I will be responsible in how I carry myself through my manners and actions- Just because I’m not at work I am still representing them in anything I do. I will always ask myself “would Dr. Warner approve?”
    • I will seek professionalism but show empathy when necessary- Being professional about my work and how I go about my daily actions is important to being a productive and successful worker. However, it is necessary to try putting yourself in another’s shoes and being able to see something through their eyes.
    • I will strive to always do my best no matter what
    • I will seek to understand others before I come to my own conclusions – I will always try to understand the other person’s side before I jump to anything or judge them.
    • I shall not judge another
    • I will respect my co workers
    • I will respect the integrity of my companies mission through my actions wherever I am- I want to make sure I learn the mission and seek to live it daily because I am a part of their mission.
    • I will strive to serve others – My mission in life and to leave this world a better place then when I came into it and through serving others this can be accomplished

  21. 1.) I would hope that the values I believe to be important could contribute and allow me to excel within the workplace. I value the education that I have gained at JMU and through activities and experiences throughout my college career. I value learning and determination when faced with a challenge, and acting proactively for the accomplishment of such a task. I value a strong sense of confidence and optimism in all situations and enthusiasm to keep myself (and others) going. I value my gregariousness and extroversion around others and perceptiveness of my environment to assess my surroundings. Finally, I value altruism and respect towards others and integrity as a quality that I believe most should have as firmly established value.

  23. There are 4 main values I will bring to the workplace, and I like to think I bring with me in everything I do daily.

Honesty - I think of myself as a very honest person, and honesty is something I look for in others and value tremendously. I would bring this honesty to the workplace with me, and think this is a highly important aspect to have present in the workplace. With honesty comes a level of trust and respect, and with these in the workplace employees can feel comfortable and valued as part of the organization they work within.

Commitment - Commitment can go a long way, as when you are committed to something you are much more likely to accomplish it. If challenges arise, commitment will be a factor that will help you push through and get things done regardless of interferences. This is something I would bring to the workplace, allowing me to commit to tasks to help ensure they are completed.

Passion - I think it is extremely important for people to be passionate about what they do, and I can guarantee that I will be. I am a health communication major, and hope to eventually work with HIV/AIDS awareness and outreach campaigns. My grandmother passed away when I was 7, suffering from Pneumocystis Pneumonia, something usually only found in people infected with HIV/AIDS. For this reason I have always had a passion for making people aware of this virus. I want to help de-stigmatize this affliction, as my grandmother did not fit into any of the stereotypical roles often associated with HIV/AIDS. I have a passion for it, and I think this type of deep seeded interest will make me a better worker than someone without it.

Understanding - An important component to working with people is being able to adapt and be understanding. I try to take time to listen to others thoughts and beliefs and see where they are coming from, and would bring this same practice and attitude to the workplace. This can make a world of difference, making working with others easier and causing the people around you to respect you and like having you around.

    Ethical Code

Approach everything with an open mind and heart - Especially working in the field I hope to work, as well as working with people, it is vital to keep an open mind and to allow others to feel comfortable with you. Keeping an open mind will help me to approach every assignment I have with the widest of possibilities to complete it. This will allow me to be creative at every opportunity and see things from the big picture. This will also help keep me from judging anyone or anything when it may seem easiest to do so.

Work hard, but not too hard - While I intend to work very hard and will hopefully be enthralled in my daily efforts, I want to be sure I don’t get too wrapped up in my profession, and leave myself time to have a personal life. I want to have a family some day and want to be able to do that while maintaining a career doing something I love.
Give 100%, 100% of the time - Everyone has days when all they want to do is lay around and sleep, and the last thing we want to do is get up and go to work. I want to give everything I’ve got every day I am at work, despite how much I may want to be home being lazy.

Be flexible, but stand my ground - I tend to be very accommodating to others, which is something people appreciate and makes for a good team player, but sometimes this becomes a fault. I need to be firm with what I want and what I believe in order to get done what I hope to, without forcing these ideas on people.

  24. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?

My mother has always taught me that character is what we do when no one is watching. I believe that we should live our lives with this understanding and that is why I try to stay true to my own personal morals and values.
    1. Honesty- I believe honesty in and out of the workplace is very important. I am an honest person and I want to work for a company that holds the same value. It is crucial that you can trust the people around you and I want be viewed as an honest and trustworthy person.
    2. Respect- Respect is something that must be earned. In a workplace environment it is something that you must show to others and others must earn yours. It is critical to respect those around you in a workplace in order for things to run smoothly. I also believe that respect goes along with honesty, for me to respect you, you must be honesty.
    3. Kindness- kindness is something I believe should be enacted in and out of the workplace. I try by best to always be a kind person. Kindness, I believe, goes a long way. In the work place it will help me get to know others in order to better fit into the company.
    4. Optimism- I have always consider myself to be and strive to be an optimistic person. There is no reason to look at the negative side of things. When things are looking down why not look at all the possibilities that it could bring. There is always a better tomorrow and there is always a way to make a bad situation a positive learning experience.

    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.

First I believe you have to love what you do. Passion is important, I want a career, not just job to pay my bills. I want to work for a company that I love and believe is doing good things in the world. Life is too short to be unhappy.
Secondly, treat others as I would want to be treated. Growing up I was taught that this is the golden rule. If I wanted to be treated with honesty and respect than I need to treat others the same way. What goes around comes around and I believe we should treat everyone kindly.
Thirdly, don’t worry about what others think. I am usually one to hesitate because I lack confidence in myself. Its my goal in my profession to put myself out there and not worry about what others think because I may have some really good ideas.
Lastly, to learn and grow. Each day is a blessing and if I am not using it to improve and learn than I am wasting my time. Life is short and I should take in everything that I can.

  25. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?

The following are the values I currently hold and will continue to hold throughout my career and life.
    1) Honesty. I value honesty within my interpersonal relationships and at the corporate level. I think the best atmosphere to work in is one where everything is up front. I hope to show my coworkers my value of honesty in both group and my individual work. I hope my coworkers share my value and are able to be honest with me about any issue they are experiencing.

    2) Commitment. I have always been a firm believer in once you agree to commit to something, to see it through towards the very end. If for some reason I am unable to finish a task on my own, I have no problem in asking for help from others. That mentality of working with others brings me to my next value, cooperation.

    3) Cooperation. I am a people person, and I think that multiple heads is far better than one. I value different views and ideas and work quite well in groups. I am looking forward to collaborating in a group setting in my career someday.

    4) Punctuality and timeliness. I value punctuality whether it is arriving to work on time or meeting a deadline. If you are going to work hard then what is the point of turning in something late. In the field of communications and public relations, time is of the essence and if you turn in an assignment late, there is no longer a use for it. I hope my value of punctuality is also a value of my fellow employees.

    5) Research. I value research as a communication studies major and a future communication professional. We must always be working toward gaining more knowledge. I think it is important to be up to date with current events and to have the expertise in using databases for research. I have been fortunate enough to learn such skills at JMU and want to utilize them in my career.

What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.

The ethical code that I will guide my career looks something like that of the Public Relations Society of America’s (PRSA’s). I am not a public relations major, but this code has been brought to my attention and I agree with the majority of what it has to say. The PRSA emphasizes the importance of being honest and accurate in all communication. The PRSA’s six core values are: advocacy, honesty, expertise, independence, loyalty, and fairness.
    1) Advocacy. –For our organization and ourselves.
    2) Honesty. –Like I stated earlier I think honesty is one of the most important qualities a successful professional should have. Whether that’s being honest with fellow employees or honest with the information one gives to the public.
    3) Expertise. –PRSA also values research and the advancement of the profession through research and education.
    4) Independence. - We are all accountable for our actions and one must always act ethically.
    5) Loyalty- To both our organization and to our obligation of serving the public interest.
    6) Fairness. – We must respect everyone’s opinion and the right of freedom of expression.
-It is important for all of us to use an ethical code in our professions and in our personal lives. It’s not always easy to determine what is good and bad ethical behavior. One rule to sort of live by is, if it doesn’t feel right, you probably shouldn’t be doing it.

  26. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?

The values that I would bring into the workplace will most likely be the same ones I bring into the classroom at JMU.
    - Respect: There cannot be trust without respect. I think that a workplace without it would not be run effectively and people not respecting one another is not something that any workplace wants.
    - Honesty: I believe that honesty allows people to be on even-footing. I try to be honest with people and in the workplace about what I think about their work, and I think it's important to have others be honest with me.
    - Faith: Having faith in others allows them to feel that they are valued and others trust them to do the job that they have been assigned to do. If you ask someone to do something or they are expected to act in a certain way, I feel it's important to have faith that they will follow through.

    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.
    - Be positive: I think that positivity is one thing that is often overlooked in today's society. Having an outlook on life and work that is not negative, I have found, leads to better work quality. No one wants to be around someone who is negative about things all the time- sometimes being positive is the biggest motivator you or someone around you needs to achieve something.
    - Follow the Golden rule: I feel this almost goes without saying and it ties in with my aforementioned "respect", but people will react to how you act. Treating others the way you want to be treated usually helps avoid unnecessary conflicts at work and makes others look at you with respect as a person which will translate to one's work.
    - "Karma": I am a big believer in karma- not the religious aspect of it but the idea that "what goes around comes around". Acting in a way that is not ethically moral in work and life always has a way of coming back around to "pay you back". Do the right thing and there won't be a question of if you have something coming to you- especially in the workplace.

  27. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?

    A. Optimism: My dad has always taught me to see the best in every situation and I find this to be something I value more and more each day. Working with someone who is negative makes even simple tasks extremely challenging, so I hope to always see the positive aspects of every situation.
    B. Loyalty: In my life, I have done my best to be loyal to each and every person that I meet. Whether you like someone or not, I do not believe in causing intentional pain. I hope to find a company that treats me well and one that I feel invested enough in to make me want to be loyal to them. If I believe in their mission, I will do everything in my power to help fulfill that mission.
    C. Relationships: My family and friends are the most important thing in my life. Without them, my life would not be nearly as fulfilling as it currently is. I strive to form some sort of connection with everyone that I meet, so my co-workers would be no exception! Until you have a relationship with someone, you are really in no place to form opinions about them or their work. I find relationships to be intriguing and hope that this is something that my workplace will value and encourage.
    D. Adaptability: Often times, things happen that are out of anyone’s control. In these situations, it is important to be resourceful and have the ability to come up with a creative new method or solution. In addition, I also value flexibility and think that it is important to have the creative freedom in the tasks I am assigned.

    2. What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.
    • Don’t rely only on first impressions. You never really know what someone’s story is, unless you take the time to ask. When you first meet someone, there could be a million different things going on in their life that affect the persona they give off; if you don’t get to know them on a deeper level, you’ll never have a clue.
    • Be compassionate. Some of the most valuable things in my life are my relationships with others.
    • Pay it forward. Have you ever noticed how one small act of kindness can completely turn your day around? Maybe someone in front of you buys your drink or you find a nice note left on your car. Remember how good these things make you feel and do the same for someone else – you never know when they might need it.
    • Be authentic. If you are not authentic, you are not only cheating others out of something potentially wonderful, but also yourself.

  28. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?

    1. Honor- (includes integrity) Being respectful, honest, and responsible for my actions (owning what I do) is extremely important to me. If something falls outside of these guides I know it isn’t right and refrain from participating. It means doing what you know is right even when no one is looking.
    2. Perseverance- When an obstacle occurs or something prevents me from doing what I was set out to do I don’t give up. I find another way to accomplish the task at hand. Where there is a will, there is a way, even if you are taking the road less traveled.
    3. Commitment- Commitment to me means honoring your word. When you say you will do something you do it. It means showing your dedication to something.
    4. Respect- respect to me requires an open mind and plenty of understanding. I know my way is not always right and I have plenty of experiences where I had to learn how to be more open minded, not judging people, and mostly not assuming what I have heard is right. Instead respecting that someone may have different views and accepting their ways of thinking even if I don’t believe in them myself.
    6. Flexibility- I like to plan but I am always willing to change them if something better is available. I am easy going and don’t mind putting in the extra hours if it means a better product will come of it. Being flexible is essential during this time of uncertainty.

What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.

    1. Would you be proud? – If my actions lead to national attention would I have still done the same thing? This question allows me to view my choices in a different light. I never want to disappoint anyone so this is a true test.
    2. Golden Rule- Although very dated I agree that if I wouldn’t want something done to me I will ensure that I don’t do that action towards anyone else.
    3. Am I jumping off the bridge question? This is a question that asks again to take and outsider’s view of what I am doing. Am I following the crowd or am I doing something because I want to do it myself. Having an identity in any job I do is important. I don’t want to do something just because it works for someone else. I still want to think and act for myself.
    4. Keep an open mind and an open heart- showing respect for people and their ideas.
    5. Let it go- Picking my battles and letting go those things that don't need to be held on to.

  29. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?

As I grow older and encounter many different experiences, I continue to learn how to better myself as a person—I learn what to do and what not to do in certain situations. Each day I strive to adhere to the following values:

    1. The Golden Rule: “loving your neighbor”; treating others with respect and dignity. I believe it is very important to treat everyone I met with respect. It fosters open and effective communication which leads to a more enjoyable and friendly work environment.

    2. Honesty- it is important to tell the truth (and nothing but the truth). I believe it is very important for companies to hire honest people. I know that I will always tell the truth. I will not discredit or damage a company’s reputation because I am honest in my work. Any organization will not have success and a credible reputation without being truthful and having employees who are also telling the truth. Without honesty, deception will occur, which in return will lead to disagreements and lower productivity.

    3. Integrity – adhering to high moral principles sets an example for others to follow. I believe that doing the right thing, especially when no one is watching, will prove to satisfying and rewarding. In the business world, I may face unethical situations. Therefore, I must realize and accept that my values and beliefs are more important that deceiving. There are plenty of other options to do something in a credible manner. I want to know that when I got to bed at night that I can sleep peacefully.

    4. Knowledge- I believe that knowledge is very powerful. Therefore, I want to learn and know everything that I can in order to be a competent worker. I will apply the information and skills I have acquired from JMU and utilize them in my career.

What ethical code might you use to guide you in your future career? Be specific, and take the time to write down a bulleted list of codes of behavior that you would follow and explain them.

1.Reciprocate the good deeds done for me- I want to help people in all that I do, so if someone does something nice for me, I will return the favor. I will (I hope) start a chain reaction, and encourage others around me to good deeds.

2.Treat others with respect- I need to be respectful of people’s actions and behaviors, so that I can better understand where they are coming from. I am always kind to everyone, and will do so in the workplace.

3.Think before making decisions- Instead of jumping to conclusions, I need to research the facts of a situation, so that I can make an informed choice. I will make informed decisions in my job so that I can have a positive outcome.

4.Leadership- I will lead by example. I need to display myself in a way that other people around me can see how I am acting— that way, other co-workers in the company can exemplify their positive traits as well.

5.Putting forth my best effort- I always do my best work. Therefore, I will do the best work that I can possibly do for any job position that I hold. It is important to me that I don’t waste my time, or anybody else’s.

  30. I have three personal values that I believe to be the most important in the workplace. Those values are honesty, hard work, and respect.

    1. I do not believe an organization cannot be successfully run if all the members are not honest with one another. Without honesty, members of an organization could begin to distrust one another which almost certainly would cause a negative impact on the productivity of the organization. Honesty should be a value shared among all people whether it applies to the workplace or elsewhere. Building an organization around this value promotes camaraderie and builds trust between members of the organization. Having trust in your co-worker allows you to rely on them and helps them to realize they can rely on you.

    2. Hard work is extremely important because if all members of an organization are not working with the same fervor, it leaves room for diminished production. Hard work means completing a task with the utmost effort so that your organization can receive the maximum benefit. If only a few members of an organization are completing their tasks with maximum effort, they organization will suffer because of the minimal efforts of others. Hard work is highly respected and co-workers will know that you are reliable if you constantly produce valuable work. And most important, hard work is almost always rewarded.

    3. Respect among coworkers is essential for positive work to be done within an organization. Without the respect of those around you, it is unlikely that your work will be taken seriously or considered valuable. Building respect among your coworkers begins with showing them that you are willing to put your trust in them from the beginning. Using honesty and working hard will show your coworkers that you are valuable and should be treated with the utmost respect.

The ethical code that I believe is the most effective is the one that is proposed by Kreps, which involves the concepts of not inflicting harm on others within an organization and employing justice in the workplace

    1. Coworkers should never intentionally attempt to deceive or harm one another- If members of an organization are not truthful to one another the whole organization will suffer. Truthfulness is extremely important so that coworkers can build trust and rely on one another for whatever the organization may face.

    2. Communication should never be meant to harm another member of the organization or their environment- Inflicting harm on members of your own organization using negative communication only makes the organization falter. Communication in the workplace should be used to solve dilemmas, not create future ones. If an organization wants to be as productive as possible, harmful communication should be used minimally, if at all. Personal problems between individual members should be solved outside of the workplace as to not negatively affect the organization.

    3. Justice should be available to all members of an organization- All members of an organization should be treated with justice based on their position within an organization. Because most organizations have a certain hierarchy, suggesting that justice be employed does not suggest equality. Each person within an organization should be treated justly based on their position in the hierarchy.

  31. I value, above all other things, people. I also value passion, open mindedness, creativity, and making a difference. I will bring these personal values with me to the workplace. I think personal values are the first aspects of yourself that are comprised when you become a working man or women. However, your personal values are the values you should hold closest to you because they make you who you are. Values in the workplace can be tricky because you want to frame your values on the basis of what your employer might consider most valuable.

In society today people have lost faith in ethics especially within major corporations. This lack of faith may sometimes be deserved but people should certainly construct a personal code of ethics before they enter the work force. So, then if they are confronted with an ethical situation they will already have a code to guide them in the right direction. Often times, people talk about the black, white, and gray areas of decision making. I think in most cases there is a right thing do it’s just sometimes hard to make the right decision especially when there may be an easy way out. The code of behavior that will guide my career includes:
•Honesty-I want to be able to tell the truth. I think that most people can say from personal experience that the truth always comes out. The consequences are always much more than if you had just told the truth in the first place.
•Treating people with respect- I want to treat people with respect and not judge them. Usually people appreciate respect and it is reciprocated.
•Stand up to people- I think sometimes people fear reporting something they see someone doing that is unethical in fear of losing their job or possibly causing a friend or coworker to lose their job. I believe that if your company fires you for doing the right thing that might not be a great company to be working for and if your friend is mad at you they may not be your friend at all.
•Protect people- As I said before I value people. If I believe something my company is doing is having negative impact on people or society I will do my best to try and improve that situation.

If something does not sit well with you there is a need to confront those feelings and ask questions. This can be applied in all aspects of life.

  33. 1. Reflect on your own personal values. What values will you bring to the workplace?
My personal values that I carry every day and will be applicable to the workplace are the following:

Discipline – It is important to be aware and able to control one’s self and recognize that when there is a job to be done, to put everything into it. Discipline goes hand in hand with hard work, and I am a believer that if you are going to do something, do it completely. The work put out is a direct reflection on the self.
Creativity/Innovation – Creativity is an essential quality to possess as it is the pathway to progress. I hold this value very high in my personal life and believe that it will prove to be a key factor for progressing through my career path. I value creativity because of the limitless doors it can open.
Honor – I value honesty and truth to the upmost degree. To me, honor and respect are one. I aim to honor those around me for the people they are, their beliefs, their background, and their goals. Everyone is on this planet trying to accomplish the same thing, and by respecting each other, we make it an easier, more harmonious journey on every one.
Reliability – You’re only as good as your word, yet actions speak louder than words. I aim every day to hold to what I say and follow through with promises and responsibilities. When other people are depending on me, I do everything in my power to come through for them because their life is also affected. To waste one’s own time is one thing, but inconveniencing someone else is a worse feeling.
Inner harmony/Optimism – This is also a very important value to me. This is a hectic world with many outside factors that influence and affect my life, and harmony and optimism is the key to happiness. Making time for myself, staying true to myself and not compromising any of my values, and following my instincts have gotten me this far. No one should sacrifice their health or happiness for anything. Life is too short.

    2. My Ethical Code: What I use to guide my everyday life as well as my future career:

-Act with good faith (do not act with malice): This goes back to our childhood rule: Do unto others as you would have done unto you. Everyone can benefit from positive energy and you lose more than you gain by acting with evil intentions.
-Do what feels right: Never compromise on something illegal or immoral, follow my instincts.
-Have Patience: Life does not go as planned, but I take it in stride and recover.
-Be Just: Everyone gets a fair chance, regardless of bias or stereotypes, or preconceived notions
-Be Consistent: I am someone to be relied on, any day of the week, any situation. Always do everything you can, and there is no doubt about your character or abilities.
